THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS. It’s not perfect by any stretch but I really like it. There are parts of this film that I can watch over and over again. Some parts not so much but it has over all real strength. When I make a film I really strive to be open to style. And of course pacing is so important! In this film about Bev, which was shot by myself, and shot over not so many days, tho spread out over winter and spring, I wanted the moments to often sit. And sit still just to see the time it takes. The investigation that Bev invests in her art. The patience. The observing that goes on.

And then the details. She is so sharp. So keen with her observations. She could be the world’s greatest spy. So Bev observes. She thinks on it. And she begins. And she mulls. And she looks again. It’s slow motion brilliance. Her paintings are beyond beauty. And they are physically very large pieces.

If ever you have the opportunity to see her work in person. Make the effort. You’ll be glad you did.

HOW I CAME TO MEET BEV: We met in the late 1990s when I made my film ‘AND SO TO BED’ for the National Film Board of Canada. Her painting ‘Twilight Navigation’ is one of my favourite paintings – period.

I love Beds and Bev paints them better than anyone.

What I can I say?! Watch ‘And So To Bed’ and you will see Bev there too!

HOW WE CAME TO MAKE THIS FILM: Being such a grand fan of her work - I pitched the idea of a film that would profile her, her process and her paintings to Cam Bennett who was the executive Producer at MTS TV.  He agreed and so off I went.

Bev and I talked about how to do this – and we agreed best case would be an exhibition style presentation. We rented a gallery and began filming.

Just a comment here about the people I work with.

Musician and composer Cesar Requena Ramos whom I continue to work with, made brilliant music as he always does! Thank you Cesar!

Howie Rissen cleaned up and mixed the audio and Jack Lauder online mastered the picture. Thanks to you Howie and Jack!

Cesar, Howie and Jack have helped to comb the hair of a few films I have made. They are super talented at what they do and they make my job of making films so much easier, fun and satisfying.

So thanks again to each of them.

Thank you to Cam Bennett, Kim Bell, Greg McLaren and all the folks who for so long ran MTS TV here in Winnipeg. They gave so many folks the opportunity to make films about Winnipeg and Manitoba that just wouldn’t have been made.

When BELL acquired MTS they promptly cut the funding to this program. Films made by local Winnipeg filmmakers are no longer happening in this way.

Neither the Canadian Broadcasting Corp in Winnipeg or the National Film Board of Canada offer any funding for these kinds of films to be made in the open and supportive way that MTS TV did during its time here.
